Research reported at an annual meeting sponsored by the journal Experimental Biology last April gave us chocolate lovers more to celebrate. Two human trials, exploring the effects of consuming chocolate with at least 70% cacao solids, demonstrated that the higher the concentration of cacao, the more positive the effects on brain function.
Improved mood, memory, and immune function, as well as stress reduction were the results of consuming intense, small chocolate bars over an extended period of time.
Keeping in mind that one ounce of bittersweet chocolate can contain 170 calories, and only about 20 mg. of caffeine. [One small cup of coffee can contain 180 mg. of caffeine.] The more intense the chocolate flavor, the more satisfied one is with a smaller serving. So, if you can be satisfied with a half ounce piece of chocolate, that would be about 85 calories, and a perfect way to satisfy a sweet tooth after a meal.
Bottom line… there is every reason to continue enjoying bittersweet chocolate, while eating mindfully to maintain a healthy weight.
